LASERS AND GUM DISEASE
Currently, our office is implementing diode lasers in the treatment of gum disease.
We are offering two services related to gum disease. One is called LBR or Laser Bacterial Reduction. The other is laser curettage.
Laser Bacterial Reduction
The LBR is for patients that have gums that bleed when brushing or flossing. Bleeding gums are not to be taken lightly. It usually means that the integrity of the gum lining the teeth is unhealthy. When blood can easily come out, then the bacteria living in the area can easily get into the bloodstream. The medical implications of repeated intrusions from oral bacteria are well documented.
Numerous investigations and reports from the U.S. surgeon General indicate that bacteria associated with chronic gum inflammation and periodontal disease have the potential to contribute to strokes, Alzheimer’s disease and heart attacks. Poor gum health can have a severely negative effect on diabetics, doubling the likelihood of their suffering heart disease and kidney failure. Low birth weight and preterms babies have been related to pregnant women who have gum disease.
The benefits of Laster Bacterial Reduction are many, including:
- Reduction or elimination of bacteria that can be introduced into the bloodstream (bacteremias)
- Destruction of periodontal disease bacteria before they have a chance to cause surround structures to lose attachment
- Prevention of spreading infection or cross-contamination from one area to another in the mouth
- Improving overall health
- Boosting the immune system
Laser Curettage
Laser Curettage is an adjunctive procedure for non-surgical treatment of gum disease. This is a condition where gum attachment and supporting structures of the tooth are being lost due to bacteria. Done in conjunction with deep cleaning or root planing, it is designed to help remove diseased tissue lining, reduce bacteria in the area gum pockets and stimulate biological activity to help the healing process.
We also plan to use the lasers to help heal aphthous ulcers and recurrent cold sores that appear on the lip.
